Their specialty pick: Hercules. Sausage, pepperoni, meatball, bacon, garlic, basil. At first glance, it's another solid meat-lover's contender.

But the addition of the garlic and basil bring a little more balance. If you're looking for a big blast of flavor from Italian meats on a hearty, thick crust, you're not going to find many pizzas that can go pound-for-pound with this one.

My favorite part : Indulging in a nice, thick slice. On one end of the pizza spectrum, you've got the classic thin-crust pizza with simple toppings.

On the other end, you've got a nice big ol' crust to munch on and just dive into. Village Pizza leans pretty heavily in the second direction without being overly greasy or heavy.

The crust is surprisingly fluffy, which pairs well with the heavy spread up top. Village Pizza has a thicker crust than most, but it isn't unwieldy, which is tough to pull off.

You get a big bite with a lot of flavor and great texture, but it's not heavy. It's a balanced pizza -- the Hercules is a great example -- that gives you the best of both pizza worlds by pulling off a tricky balancing act with the Greek-style.

Casa Pizzeria, Ludlow. Casa is a little it of an oddball in this competition. They've only been open for about eight months and are only open for four hours a day.

So why are they here? The pizza is great and customers have been quick to catch on. Casa Pizzeria sticks to traditional pizzas in a high-temperature oven to get that brick oven-style thin crust pizza.
